Amritsar, July 25 (K.L. Jit Walia): The Congress party organized a candle march in Amritsar to pay tribute to the young people who lost their lives during the student protest held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. A large number of party workers, students, and supporters participated in the march.
Speaking to the media, senior Congress leader Dr. Raj Kumar Verka said that Amritsar, the land of Jallianwala Bagh, has always stood against injustice and oppression. He appreciated the Congress workers for gathering to remember the students who struggled for transparency in the education system and sacrificed their lives.
Dr. Verka described the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a major victory for the Constitution, democracy, and the struggle of the youth. He said it reflected the ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the voice raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He alleged that the Central Government was compelled to act due to the sustained protests by students.
Congress Working President Sukhwinder Singh Danny Bundala, former MLA Sunil Datti, former Punjab Mahila Congress President Mamta Dutta, senior Congress leader Jagdeep Singh Rinku Narula, former MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma, and senior leader Pawan Sharma criticized the BJP, stating that claiming any political victory after the loss of young lives was unfortunate. They termed the alleged paper leak incidents a betrayal of the future of millions of students and demanded strict action against those responsible. They also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apologize to the nation over the issue.
Amritsar Urban Congress District President Saurabh Madan (Mithu) said that the party had already planned the candle march, but after the minister’s resignation, it also became a symbol of the victory of democracy and the Constitution. Congress leaders also paid floral tribute at the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
The Congress leaders demanded a fair investigation into the alleged paper leak cases and strict action against those found guilty. They also called for an inquiry into the alleged police baton charge during the student protest. Reaffirming their commitment, they said the Congress party would continue to stand firmly with students in their fight for justice and their rights.
