Amritsar, March 6 (K.L. Jit Walia) – In a major breakthrough during the ongoing drive to make Punjab safer under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted a cross-border illegal arms smuggling module. Six individuals including a minor were arrested and five modern pistols along with a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from their possession. This information was shared by Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav.
The arrested accused have been identified as Rohit Kumar (18), a resident of Maqboolpura Amritsar; Karanbir Singh alias Ajay (24), a resident of village Kale Tarn Taran; Jashandeep Singh alias Gyani (18), Onkar Singh alias Vansh (21) and Akashdeep Singh (24), all residents of village Mari Megha in Tarn Taran; along with a 16-year-old minor. The recovered weapons include one .30 bore pistol, one 9 mm Glock pistol, one .30 bore PX5 pistol, one 9 mm Taurus pistol and one 9 mm Greta pistol manufactured in Pakistan, along with 34 live cartridges.
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers through social media platforms. They used to receive consignments of weapons dropped by drones from across the border. Acting on instructions from their handlers, the accused would collect the weapons and supply them to different areas.
He further said that further investigation is underway to uncover the entire network and identify other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
Sharing details of the operation, Commissioner of Police Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that during routine patrolling and checking of suspicious persons, police teams acted swiftly and apprehended Rohit Kumar along with a minor. A .30 bore pistol and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from them.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that the illegal weapons were supplied to them by Karanbir Singh alias Ajay. Acting on this information, police teams arrested Karanbir and continued the investigation. Further questioning led to the arrest of the weapon suppliers identified as Onkar Singh alias Vansh, Akashdeep Singh and Jashandeep alias Gyani. Four additional pistols were recovered from their possession.
A case has been registered at Maqboolpura Police Station in Amritsar under FIR No. 59 dated 28-02-2026 under Sections 25 (6, 7, 8) of the Arms Act. Police officials stated that further investigation in the case is ongoing and more arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days.
