Amritsar, January 27 :- Senior BJP leader Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina has welcomed and praised the Modi government’s decision to resolve the long-pending issue related to barbed wire fencing along the India–Pakistan border, calling it a major step in the interest of farmers.
Chhina said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a commendable decision by relocating the barbed wire fencing closer to the international border, which has helped restore thousands of acres of cultivable land to farmers in several border districts of Punjab. He described the move as both farmer-friendly and strategically sound.
Sharing details of a letter he had written to the central government on December 6, 2025, Chhina told mediapersons that the reinstallation of the fencing near the international boundary was an appropriate and well-considered decision. He said the move would save thousands of acres of fertile agricultural land and reflects the government’s strong commitment to protecting farmers’ interests while strengthening border security.
He explained that since the 1990s, due to security challenges, barbed wire fencing was erected inside Indian territory, which resulted in large stretches of agricultural land falling outside the fence. As a consequence, farmers had to cross the fencing under strict security protocols and within limited time windows to cultivate their fields, making their livelihoods extremely difficult for decades.
Praising the decision to shift the fencing, Chhina said it would enhance BSF control in the area. He added that the move would not only restore productive use of agricultural land but also significantly curb cross-border smuggling and other illegal activities.
Chhina also appealed to the central government to officially acquire the land between the new fencing and the international border and place it directly under BSF control. He suggested that the BSF could use this land for cultivating pulses and vegetables, especially in areas where tube wells are available, to meet its own requirements. Any surplus produce, he said, could be sold in the open market.
Concluding his remarks, Chhina said the Modi government has once again demonstrated that national security and farmers’ welfare are complementary priorities. He noted that the decision reflects the government’s responsiveness to public concerns and its commitment to resolving long-pending, practical issues. He expressed hope that this step would mark the beginning of a new era of security and prosperity in Punjab’s border regions.
