A delegation of the Punjab Pradesh Vyapar Mandal (Amritsar unit) met Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar and submitted a memorandum highlighting 11 major demands for the development of Amritsar city.
Amritsar, June 13 (K.L. Jeet Walia) — Under the leadership of Surinder Duggal, President of the Punjab Pradesh Vyapar Mandal (Amritsar unit), a delegation of traders met the Union Minister at a local hotel. Former MP Shwait Malik, Pyare Lal Seth, and Dr. Harvinder Sandhu were also present on the occasion.
The delegation urged the Union Minister to expedite the long-pending Unity Mall project with joint support from the Central and Punjab governments. They said the project would give a new boost to trade, tourism, and employment in the city.
Key demands included completion of the outer ring road, development of modern transport systems to ease traffic congestion, proper utilization of the old telephone exchange building, affiliation of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital with PGI Chandigarh, and establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Amritsar.
They also demanded setting up an export facilitation center and cold storage facility at Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport to ensure smooth export of goods and reduce losses due to spoilage.
Other demands included a fair tax system for foreign e-commerce companies, compensation for GST-registered traders in case of fire or accidents, and effective implementation of MSME schemes.
The traders emphasized that, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Central government support is essential to make Amritsar a clean, prosperous, and safe city.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar assured the delegation that the demands would be seriously reviewed with concerned ministries and necessary action would be taken.
On this occasion, several representatives including Pyare Lal Seth, Rakesh Thukral, Sameer Jain, and Balbir Bhaseen honored the minister with floral garlands, shawls, and mementos.
The meeting was attended by representatives of around 52 trade associations associated with the Punjab Pradesh Vyapar Mandal, Amritsar unit.
