If the dump is not cleared within a week, a protest will be launched – Kamaljit Singh, Sukh, Bhardwaj
Amritsar, May 31 (K.L. Jit Walia): Residents of the Shivpuri Narayangarh area are facing serious problems due to a large garbage heap that has accumulated nearby. In addition, garbage is being openly dumped near the gate of the cremation ground, causing the level of filth and pollution in the area to increase continuously.
Although the administration launches cleanliness drives from time to time, their impact is hardly visible on the ground. Campaigns are conducted in the name of cleanliness, but the garbage problem remains unresolved.
President of the Chheharta Sangharsh Committee, Kamaljit Singh, along with Sukhjinderpal Singh Sukh, Harmanpreet Singh, Shivpuri Narayangarh President Panna Lal Bhardwaj, Satish Mantu, M.D. Rikhi, and Pintu Bedi, stated that for the last three months, the Municipal Corporation has been dumping garbage near the entrance of Shivpuri Narayangarh, effectively turning the area into a dumping site.
They said that earlier as well, garbage heaps were created along the roadside, which eventually blocked the sewer system. As a result, dirty water entered Shivpuri and even reached the cremation ground. After strong public protests, the area was finally cleaned with great difficulty.
The leaders alleged that the Municipal Corporation has once again started dumping garbage near the Shivpuri gate, gradually converting the area into a permanent dump. They warned that the unhygienic conditions could lead to the spread of various diseases, yet no attention is being paid to sanitation.
Shivpuri President Panna Lal Bhardwaj and Satish Mantu stated that they had informed the local MLA three times about the area’s development issues and sanitation problems. However, apart from visiting the site and offering assurances, no concrete action has been taken.
Chheharta Sangharsh Committee President Kamaljit Singh and Sukhjinderpal Singh Sukh said that the garbage heap near the Shivpuri gate is also causing inconvenience to people visiting the cremation ground for last rites.
They pointed out that while the government is running cleanliness campaigns and issuing fines to people who litter, it is simultaneously allowing garbage to be dumped near the Shivpuri gate, undermining the very objectives of the cleanliness mission.
The leaders further stated that the filth is not only affecting the dignity of Shivpuri and nearby religious places but is also creating conditions favorable for the spread of infectious diseases such as dengue and malaria.
Warning the authorities, they said that if the garbage dump is not removed and the area is not cleaned within one week, they will be compelled to launch protests and demonstrations along with local residents.
