Amritsar, April 30 (K.L. Jit Walia, Phulljit Singh Varpal):In protest against the power cuts being imposed in Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal, under the leadership of Narendra Behal, in-charge of Amritsar Central Assembly Constituency, staged a strong protest at the 132 KV Power House located at Gate Hakiman.
The protest began with slogan-shouting against the Punjab Government. Speaking to journalists, Narendra Behal said that under the directions of Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal, protests are being held outside power houses across Punjab today and memorandums are also being submitted to awaken the government and provide relief to the people from prolonged power cuts.
He said that the government has failed to maintain electricity supply even at the beginning of the summer season, while the situation may worsen further during the peak summer ahead. He questioned how farmers will sow paddy without electricity, how students will study, and how working people will manage their jobs without power.
Narendra Behal accused the government of misleading the public by justifying power cuts in the name of maintenance. He said that if maintenance work had to be done, it should have been completed during the winter season.
He claimed that during the rule of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Punjab was a power-surplus state and people never faced any shortage of electricity. He appealed to the people to bring the Shiromani Akali Dal back to power in the next government so Punjab can return to the path of development.
Prominent leaders and workers present on the occasion included:
Circle President Central Iqbal Singh Pasricha, Amarjit Singh Dhillon, Prabhjot Singh, Azad Dhillon, Nirmal Singh, Vice President Sahil, Bibi Mutiyar, Madam Parvinder, Karnail Singh, Vishal Arora, along with a large number of party leaders and workers.
