Amritsar, April 2 (K.L. Jit Walia): Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla raised serious concerns in Parliament over the rapidly increasing cases of cancer in Punjab.
He stated that earlier, cancer cases were more prevalent in the Malwa region, but now the Majha region—especially Amritsar—is witnessing a sharp rise in cases. Data from the Chief Minister’s Cancer Relief Scheme indicates a continuous increase in the number of patients in Amritsar.
Aujla highlighted that cancer treatment is extremely expensive and often beyond the reach of common and economically weaker sections. The treatment process is prolonged, and in many cases, the disease is diagnosed at a late stage, making it difficult to save patients’ lives. As a result, many families face financial ruin, and their livelihoods are severely affected.
He also elaborated on the possible causes behind the rising cancer cases, stating that:
Proper management of sewage and drainage systems in cities is lacking
The Tung Dhab Drain has become a major source of pollution
Excessive use of pesticides in agriculture is widespread
Harmful elements, including traces of uranium, are reportedly being found in groundwater
He emphasized that it is the primary responsibility of governments to provide clean and safe drinking water and to strictly control pollution.
MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla urged the central government to ensure better and more affordable cancer treatment facilities. He also demanded that under the Prime Minister’s Relief Scheme, cancer patients should receive at least ₹10 lakh in financial assistance so that no patient is deprived of treatment due to lack of funds.
