Amritsar 31 December 2025 — Keeping in view the severe cold and cold wave prevailing during the winter season, the Municipal Corporation Amritsar (MCA) has made arrangements for free night shelters for homeless persons in the city. Further strengthening these arrangements, the Municipal Corporation Amritsar has provided a permanent arrangement of 125 beds at Gol Bagh and a temporary arrangement of 15 beds at Guru Nanak Bhawan, which are developed and operated by the Corporation.
In this regard, a review meeting regarding winter preparedness and night shelter arrangements was held today on 31/12/2025. The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner Shri Vishal Wadhawan, Secretary Shri Sushant Bhatia, along with other concerned officers and staff. During the meeting, directions were issued to ensure proper management of night shelters, cleanliness, and availability of beds, blankets, and heaters.
As per the directions of Commissioner Shri Bikramjit Singh Shergill, complete arrangements of beds, warm blankets, and heaters have been ensured in these shelter homes, along with drinking water, electricity, sanitation, and basic medical facilities, so that homeless persons can be protected from extreme cold and provided with a safe and dignified shelter.
The Municipal Commissioner has directed all concerned departments and field staff to identify homeless persons in different areas of the city and ensure their transportation to night shelters, especially during nighttime when the cold intensifies. Regular inspections of these arrangements are also being conducted.
The Municipal Corporation Amritsar has appealed to city residents, social organizations, and voluntary bodies to immediately inform MCA officials if any homeless person requires assistance, so that timely help can be provided during the cold wave. MCA reiterated its commitment to the safety of vulnerable sections of society and assured that every effort will be made to ensure that no person is forced to stay under the open sky during severe winter conditions.
