In Punjab, the dream of going abroad lives in the eyes of almost every second young person today. Countries like Canada, Australia, United States, and various parts of Europe attract youth with promises of a better future, higher income, and an improved standard of living. However, in the race to fulfill these dreams, many young individuals are falling into the trap of fake immigration agents and losing their life savings.
In recent times, several cases of fraud worth crores of rupees have surfaced in Punjab, especially in regions like Mohali and Chandigarh. Fraudulent gangs have been deceiving people by offering work permits, student visas, permanent residency (PR), and other visa services for countries like Canada and Australia. These agents lure innocent people with false promises, fake documents, and misleading information.
According to immigration expert Harsangeet Singh, many innocent youth in Punjab become victims of such scams due to their strong desire to build a better future abroad. These agents often operate without any government license but present themselves as professional immigration consultants.
He further explained that agents charge lakhs of rupees from families under the pretext of arranging visas and work permits. Many parents invest their lifetime savings, sell land, or take loans at high interest rates to pay these amounts. Unfortunately, in many cases, neither the visa is granted nor the money is returned. Instead, families are left running from police stations to courts in search of justice.
Harsangeet Singh also highlighted the dangers of the so-called “Dunki route,” where individuals attempt to migrate illegally using forged documents or unauthorized pathways. Several young people have lost their lives in such attempts. Cases related to human trafficking have also emerged, making the issue even more serious.
Courts have termed this issue a “growing menace” and have made strict observations. Police and administrative authorities have repeatedly warned people to deal only with licensed and government-approved agents.
He advised youth to avoid submitting applications through unauthorized agents and to always follow proper legal channels for visa applications. One should not fall for shortcuts, illegal routes, or the temptation of quick success. It is crucial to gather complete information about the agent and the visa process to identify potential fraud.
He also recommended making payments through online modes or cheques instead of cash, so that proper records are maintained as evidence if needed. Illegal methods not only lead to financial loss but also shatter the hopes of entire families.
Going abroad is not wrong—but choosing the wrong path can be dangerous. Awareness, accurate information, and legal procedures are the keys to a safe and successful future.
