Amritsar, April 29 (K.L. Jit Walia, Fuljeet Varpal):The Bhagtanwala Dump in the southern constituency of Amritsar is rapidly turning into a major environmental and public health concern. The लगातार बढ़ते कूड़े के पहाड़ (ever-growing mountains of garbage) are posing a serious threat to the health of local residents.
Addressing the issue, Sarabjit Singh Sonu Jandiala, Working President of the OBC Department of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, visited the site and interacted with locals. He stated that he has been raising the demand to relocate the dump to another location for a long time, but no concrete action has been taken so far.
He alleged that political parties have turned the Bhagtanwala dump and the city’s drainage system into tools of vote-bank politics. Leaders make big promises during elections, but fail to act once the elections are over.
Sarabjit Singh further said that these massive garbage heaps are breeding grounds for serious diseases, severely impacting the local population. Residents are facing persistent foul smell, breathing difficulties, and various health-related problems. He also expressed concern over the rising number of cancer cases in Amritsar, calling it a deeply alarming issue.
He added that every three months, authorities assure that the problem will be resolved, but instead of improving, the situation continues to worsen. This time, the volume of garbage has increased even more, leading to growing anger among residents.
In conclusion, Sarabjit Singh Sonu Jandiala urged the government and administration to take immediate action on this serious issue and find a permanent solution for the Bhagtanwala dump and drainage system, so that people can live in a safe and healthy environment.
