Amritsar, May 19 (K.L. Jit Walia) — The research wing of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, known as the Swadeshi Research Institute, released a detailed report on the subject of “Energy Self-Reliance.” The report presents a strategic roadmap aimed at reducing India’s growing dependence on imported crude oil, LNG, and LPG, while building an energy-secure and self-reliant India.
Speaking on the issue, Dr. Neha Tejpal, CA Amit Handa, CA Bhavesh Mahajan, Piyush Bhatia, Shri Keshav, and other members stated that India spends nearly 165 billion US dollars annually — approximately ₹14 lakh crore — on hydrocarbon imports. The country imports around 88 percent of its crude oil requirements and nearly 64 percent of its LPG needs from foreign countries.
According to the report, India spends approximately ₹3,200 crore to ₹3,770 crore every day on the import of crude oil, LNG, and LPG. This puts immense pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves and makes India increasingly vulnerable to global geopolitical instability.
The institute stated that the time has come to view energy conservation as a form of national service and economic patriotism. Citizens were encouraged to adopt energy-efficient lifestyles by switching off vehicle engines at traffic signals, driving at fuel-efficient speeds, promoting carpooling, using public transport as much as possible, and reducing unnecessary fuel consumption.
The report also emphasized household-level energy conservation. Homemakers were advised to use pressure cookers, cook on controlled flames, soak grains before cooking, and adopt induction cooking and solar-energy-based systems. The report highlighted that induction cooking systems are more energy-efficient than traditional LPG-based cooking and can significantly reduce dependence on imported fuels.
One of the major recommendations in the report is the launch of a “National E-Cooking Mission,” under which electricity tariffs during off-peak hours should be made significantly cheaper than LPG, encouraging people to adopt electricity-based cooking systems more rapidly.
The institute clarified that energy self-reliance is not merely an economic necessity but also a crucial national requirement linked to India’s sovereignty, national security, employment generation, and long-term sustainable development.
The Swadeshi Research Institute appealed to policymakers, industries, educational institutions, and citizens to turn “Energy Self-Reliance” into a mass movement and actively contribute towards building a truly self-reliant India.
During the discussion, Dr. Neha Tejpal, CA Amit Handa, CA Bhavesh Mahajan, Piyush Bhatia, and others urged people to become more aware about saving energy.
