Amritsar, March 7 (K.L. Jit Walia) — Mangat Ram Silli, President of Shri Ram Social Welfare Society, has urged Bhagwant Mann and the Punjab Police leadership to launch a special campaign to eliminate drug trafficking from the state. He said strong and decisive action is needed to completely stop the spread of drugs in Punjab.
Silli stated that although the Punjab government and police are organizing awareness programs in villages towns neighborhoods and cities under the mission of a drug-free Punjab the situation on the ground still remains worrying. According to him the use and trade of drugs appear to be increasing rather than decreasing which is a serious concern for society.
He expressed deep concern that drug addiction is pushing the youth of Punjab toward destruction and many families have already been devastated because of it. He said that at the age when parents should be receiving support from their children many are instead losing their sons due to drug abuse. In several heartbreaking cases parents have even had to carry the funeral bier of their young sons which reflects the tragic impact of drugs on society.
Silli also alleged that drugs are being sold openly in several areas of the state. He said that in some cases there appears to be negligence by the police administration and reports of involvement of certain police personnel have also surfaced which makes it difficult to effectively control drug trafficking.
He further pointed out that government-run de-addiction centers are not always producing the expected results. Many centers reportedly face shortages of medicines and proper facilities which creates difficulties for young people who genuinely want to overcome addiction.
In the end Mangat Ram Silli strongly appealed to the Chief Minister and the state police leadership to take firm steps against drug traffickers and ensure strict enforcement so that Punjab can truly move toward becoming a drug-free state.
