Amritsar, September 7 (K.L. Jeet Walia): In a major breakthrough during the ongoing campaign to make Punjab a safer state, Amritsar Rural Police have busted an alleged cross-border smuggling module and arrested two persons with 15 illegal pistols and 5 kilograms of heroin, according to police.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the operation was carried out as part of the state’s ongoing campaign against narcotics and illegal weapons.
The arrested accused have been identified as Deepak Singh, a resident of Roranwala Khurd, and Shubhpreet Singh alias Shubh, a resident of Verka-Majitha Bypass, Amritsar.
According to the DGP, preliminary investigation suggests that the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based handlers and were receiving consignments of illegal weapons and narcotics on their instructions before allegedly supplying them further.
The DGP said further investigation is underway to identify other persons involved in the case and to dismantle the wider network linked to illegal arms and drug trafficking.
Police Intercepted the Accused at a Checkpoint
Sharing details of the operation, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Border Range, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that teams of Police Station Gharinda had received credible information that two suspected persons allegedly involved in trafficking illegal pistols and heroin were moving in the Attari area.
Acting on the information, the police set up a checkpoint at the Dhussi Bundh T-point on the Attari-Jhabal Road and intercepted two suspects travelling on an Activa scooter.
The accused were identified as Shubhpreet Singh, who was riding the scooter, and Deepak Singh, who was sitting behind him. During the search, police allegedly recovered 15 pistols and 5 kilograms of heroin from their possession.
Two More Accused Identified
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural, Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal, said that during the interrogation of the two arrested accused, police identified two more persons allegedly associated with the module.
Police teams are continuing raids to arrest the remaining accused, he added.
FIR Registered
In this connection, FIR No. 388 dated September 6, 2026, has been registered at Police Station Gharinda, Amritsar Rural, under Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act and Section 25(8) of the Arms Act.
Further investigation into the alleged cross-border smuggling network is underway.
