Amritsar, August 31 (K.L. Jit Walia, R.K. Soni): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Office In-charge and Member of Parliament Tarun Chugh has raised serious questions over the functioning of the Punjab Government and the Municipal Corporation regarding cleanliness and waste management in Amritsar. Referring to the large quantity of waste accumulated at the dumping site on Jhabal Road and the affidavit filed by the Punjab Pollution Control Board before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in connection with the matter, Chugh criticized the government’s handling of the situation.
Tarun Chugh said that Amritsar is an important city from religious, historical and tourism perspectives, but the condition of cleanliness and waste disposal in several parts of the city remains a matter of concern. He alleged that the dumping of garbage along the roadside near Jhabal Road is causing considerable difficulties for local residents and students.
He said that the route has several educational institutions, religious places and a large residential population. The accumulation of garbage and foul smell in the area is affecting the daily lives of people. Chugh demanded that the administration strengthen the city’s waste-management system and immediately undertake a special cleanliness drive in the affected areas.
The BJP MP said that maintaining cleanliness in a sacred and historic city like Amritsar is the responsibility of the government and the local administration. He urged the state government to focus on ground-level action instead of advertisements and claims and ensure a clean and healthy environment for residents.
Tarun Chugh said that the BJP would continue to raise issues related to public health, environmental protection and the prestige of Amritsar. He also called upon the government to take concrete and effective steps to make the city cleaner and more beautiful.
