10-day state-level cleanliness drive begins; MCA appeals to citizens to actively participate in keeping Amritsar clean
Amritsar, August 29 (K.L. Jit Walia): As per the directions of the Punjab Government’s Local Government Department, the “Clean Punjab Campaign” was launched simultaneously at 7:00 AM today across all cities of Punjab, including Amritsar.
In Amritsar, the campaign was launched across all five Assembly constituencies with the active participation of the respective MLAs, elected representatives and officials of the Municipal Corporation Amritsar (MCA).
A special 10-day cleanliness campaign has been initiated and will continue until September 8, 2026. During the campaign, special emphasis will be placed on improving sanitation arrangements, removing garbage from public places, cleaning unclean areas, removing encroachments affecting cleanliness and creating awareness among citizens about responsible waste management.
Cleanliness activities conducted across all five constituencies
Simultaneous cleanliness activities were organized in all five Assembly constituencies of Amritsar.
From the South constituency, MLA Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar participated in the campaign along with Additional Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr. Jai Inder Singh.
From the Central constituency, MLA Dr. Ajay Gupta led the campaign along with Mayor Jatinder Singh Bhatia.
From the West constituency, MLA Dr. Jasbir Singh Sandhu participated along with Assistant Commissioner Daljit Singh, while from the East constituency, MLA Dr. Jeevanjot Kaur participated with Assistant Commissioner Vishal Wadhawan.
In the North constituency, AIT Chairman Karamjit Singh Rinku coordinated the campaign and ensured that cleanliness activities were carried out effectively and visibly.
The respective MLAs and elected representatives participated in the campaign and encouraged residents to actively contribute towards keeping their neighbourhoods, streets, markets and public places clean.
MCA officials and sanitation teams were deployed across different parts of the city. Officers and field staff monitored the ongoing work and ensured effective utilization of sanitation workers, machinery and other resources.
During the campaign, special attention will be given to cleaning roadsides, removing accumulated garbage, cleaning markets and public places, improving sanitation in residential areas, preventing littering and creating awareness regarding proper disposal of domestic and commercial waste.
The campaign will also strengthen coordination between the Municipal Corporation, elected representatives, sanitation workers, market associations, resident welfare associations, educational institutions, voluntary organizations and citizens.
MCA appeals to citizens
The Municipal Corporation Amritsar has appealed to every citizen to make the “Clean Punjab Campaign” a people’s movement. The corporation emphasized that cleanliness cannot be ensured through government agencies alone and that active public participation is equally important.
Citizens have been urged to:
- Avoid throwing garbage on roads, streets, vacant plots or public places.
- Hand over household waste only to the authorized door-to-door waste collection system.
- Segregate wet and dry waste at the source.
- Keep markets, areas outside shops and surrounding areas clean.
- Avoid littering and encourage others to do the same.
- Do not dump construction material or other waste on public land.
- Cooperate with sanitation workers and MCA teams during the cleanliness campaign.
MCA appealed to residents not to consider cleanliness merely a 10-day campaign, but to make it a part of their daily civic responsibility and routine.
The Municipal Corporation called upon residents, traders, market associations, youth groups, NGOs, educational institutions and social organizations to actively participate in cleanliness and awareness activities throughout the 10-day campaign.
The message of the campaign is clear: “A clean Amritsar is not only the responsibility of the Municipal Corporation, but the responsibility of every citizen.”
MCA reiterated its commitment to making Amritsar cleaner, healthier and more beautiful and appealed to citizens to actively participate in the “Clean Punjab Campaign” being conducted from August 29 to September 8, 2026.
