Amritsar, August 24 (Phulljit Singh Verpal/Parveen Pandit): The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee has removed traditional Congress leaders from the posts of block presidents and appointed party switchers in their place, alleged Councillor Jaswinder Singh Shergill, former Block President and Vice Chairman of the SC Department, Punjab Congress.
Shergill said that the person appointed as Block President of South-1 resides in the West Assembly constituency and, in terms of business, is associated with the East constituency. He further alleged that the individual has changed political parties several times.
Regarding the appointment of the South-2 Block President, Shergill said that the appointee is also not a traditional Congress worker and had allegedly failed to save his security deposit during the Municipal Corporation elections. Despite this, he has now been given responsibility for eight wards.
Shergill said that he would have been very happy if traditional Congress workers had been given an opportunity instead, as block presidents play an important role in strengthening the Congress party at the grassroots level.
He said that, in his personal opinion, the appointments of block presidents in the South Assembly constituency would not strengthen the Congress but could weaken it. Keeping the 2027 elections in mind, he urged the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president to reconsider the appointments of block presidents in the South constituency in the interest of strengthening the party.
Rajbir Singh Dhillon, Captain Baljit Singh, Fauji Balkar Singh and Sarabjit Singh Sandhu were also present on the occasion.
