Amritsar (K.L. Jit Walia) – Ustad Shri Sameer Rana Ji was a highly respected figure in the world of Indian classical music. He was not just an accomplished artist, but also a great teacher, mentor, and source of inspiration. His entire life stood as a symbol of struggle, humility, and unwavering dedication to his art.
Born into a modest family in Odisha, Ustad Ji’s journey in music was far from easy. At that time, opportunities for learning classical music in his region were limited. However, through sheer hard work and determination, he overcame every obstacle. Under the guidance of his gurus, he underwent years of rigorous training (riyaz) and deeply absorbed the intricacies of music. This struggle became the foundation of his strong character and deep respect for tradition.
He began his teaching career in Odisha, where he trained numerous students and instilled in them a love for music. In the 1990s, during a period of unrest in Punjab, he courageously moved there to start a new chapter in his life. Facing a new language and culture, he encountered many challenges, especially since he was not fluent in Punjabi or Hindi. Despite this, his simplicity and dedication helped him earn the trust and respect of the people.
Ustad Ji served in various educational institutions and also taught music in institutions associated with the armed forces. His contributions were recognized and honored multiple times, including by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs).
One of his most remarkable qualities was his generosity. He believed that music is a divine gift meant to be shared with everyone. He never made fees compulsory for his students—those who could afford it contributed voluntarily, while those who couldn’t were still given equal learning opportunities. For him, passion and dedication mattered the most.
Today, his students are achieving success in various fields. Renowned music director Kanwaljit Babblu, several artists from the Punjabi music industry, Professor Neha Bali from Khalsa College Amritsar, and noted tabla player Bikramjit Singh associated with Sri Darbar Sahib—all reflect his teachings in their work. His son Lakshya is also carrying forward his legacy internationally, especially by organizing musical events in the United States and providing a platform for artists.
Although Ustad Shri Sameer Rana Ji is no longer with us, his teachings and influence will live on forever. His life teaches us that true dedication, selfless service, and commitment to one’s goals can overcome any difficulty.
Today, a special program is being at Prabhakar Senior Secondary School, Chheharta, in his memory, where tribute will be paid through music.
