Amritsar, February 2 (K.L. Jit Walia):The Amritsar Commissionerate Police have arrested a man who impersonated Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh and threatened a government doctor over the phone.
Addressing a press conference, DCP Law Mr. Alam Vijay Singh said that the accused, Harjit Singh, a resident of Gurbaksh Nagar in the Gate Hakiman police station area, called the SMO of Civil Hospital, Dr. Rajnish Kumar, claiming to be the Health Minister. The caller allegedly pressured the doctor to remove certain staff members and retain others, while also making derogatory remarks against hospital staff.
When Dr. Rajnish Kumar grew suspicious and questioned him again, the accused changed his identity and claimed to be Gurjeet Singh from the Health Minister’s office in Patiala. The matter was then brought to the notice of Civil Surgeon Dr. Satinder Singh Bajaj, who directly contacted the Health Minister and confirmed that no such call had been made, nor was there any person named Gurjeet Singh in the minister’s office.
Following this, Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar was informed. Acting swiftly, the police traced the phone number and, under the leadership of ADCP-1 Vishaljeet Singh, arrested Harjit Singh.
An FIR No. 16 dated 03-02-2026 has been registered against the accused under Sections 204, 217, 221, and 351(2) of the BNS at Police Station A-Division, Amritsar.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused was trying to exert pressure to get his son Dharampreet Singh, who works as a security guard and had been transferred under government orders, reinstated at the same place. Police officials also stated that Harjit Singh has a criminal history with cases registered against him at various police stations. His wife is currently employed as a Class-IV employee at the Civil Hospital.The police have initiated further investigation into the matter.
