Amritsar, July 3 (K.L. Jit Walia): Timely social security assistance for thousands of senior citizens and needy families across Punjab is not just financial support but also a means of ensuring their dignity and security. In line with this commitment, the Punjab Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development has released more than ₹15.83 billion (₹1,583 crore) during the financial year 2026–27.
Sharing this information, MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur from Amritsar East said that the initiative has directly benefited lakhs of senior citizens, widows, destitute women, orphaned children, and persons with disabilities through financial assistance. She stated that under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state government has strengthened the social security system by ensuring timely and dignified support reaches those who need it the most.
The MLA said that for the Punjab Government, social security is not merely a budgetary provision but a solemn commitment toward the welfare of vulnerable sections of society. She added that the government has allocated a record ₹6,131.91 crore for social security and welfare schemes in the current financial year, benefiting nearly 3.6 million (36 lakh) beneficiaries across the state.
She further informed that more than ₹1,048 crore has been directly transferred to beneficiaries under the old-age pension scheme. Additionally, over ₹535 crore has been released under various social security schemes for widows, destitute women, orphaned and dependent children, and persons with disabilities. She said these measures reinforce the government’s commitment to building a socially secure and prosperous Punjab.
