Model Code of Conduct Implemented in Municipal Councils Going to Polls
Amritsar, May 12 (K.L. Jit Walia) – According to notifications issued by the Department of Local Government under Section 7A of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 and Section 13-A of the Punjab Municipal Election Act, 1911, the State Election Commission has announced the election schedule for conducting general elections to 8 Municipal Corporations, 76 Municipal Councils, and 21 Nagar Panchayats across the state, totaling 105 urban local bodies.
Under these elections, polls will be conducted for five Municipal Councils in Amritsar district — Ajnala, Jandiala Guru, Majitha, Ramdas, and Rayya.
Providing information in this regard, District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Amritsar Dalwinderjit Singh stated that as per the schedule issued by the State Election Commission, the nomination process for these elections will begin on May 13, 2026 (Wednesday) from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The last date for filing nominations will be May 16, 2026 (Saturday). Nominations will be filed in the offices of the designated Returning Officers.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on May 18, 2026 (Monday), while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 19, 2026 (Tuesday) up to 3:00 PM.
He further informed that all nomination forms must be accompanied by affidavits, and candidates sponsored by political parties must also submit authorization letters issued by their respective parties. The KYC details of candidates will be uploaded on the district website.
The District Election Officer stated that polling for the Municipal Council elections will be conducted on May 26, 2026 (Tuesday) from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Counting of votes will take place on May 29, 2026 (Friday) at designated counting centers.
Dalwinderjit Singh said that under the directions of the State Election Commission, the district administration has made all necessary arrangements to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.
He added that with the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in the jurisdiction areas of the five Municipal Councils where elections are to be held. The code will remain in force until the completion of the election process.
