Appeal to retired employees to maintain unity over their issues
Amritsar, August 7 (K.L. Jit Walia): The monthly meeting of the Railway Retired Welfare Association was held at the URMU Bhawan, Railway Road, Amritsar, under the leadership of Association President S. Beant Singh. A large number of retired railway employees attended the meeting.
The meeting began with an address by Secretary S. Swaran Singh Sandhu, followed by a tribute to the departed souls of former colleagues. The main agenda of the meeting was the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Samjhauta Express.
On the occasion, Secretary S. Swaran Singh Sandhu recalled memories associated with the Samjhauta Express and thanked all former colleagues who had served on the historic train for attending the event. The Golden Jubilee of the Samjhauta Express was celebrated with enthusiasm.
S. Swaran Singh Sandhu also extended strong support to the protest being held by retired employees of Punjab in Chandigarh on August 7 and appealed to his colleagues to participate in large numbers.
Assistant Secretary S. Gurpreet Singh briefed members about the activities and functioning of the association. He said that with the cooperation of members, the organization had succeeded in resolving several long-pending issues. He appealed to all members to maintain unity and continue their membership by regularly contributing the prescribed subscription.
Working President S. Iqbal Singh recalled the historic date of July 22, 1976, stating that the Samjhauta Express was started under the Shimla Agreement. He also shared details about the difficulties faced by railway employees while operating the train.
During the programme, former railway employees who contributed to the successful operation of the Samjhauta Express, including S. Swaran Singh, Jagdish Singh, Kishori Lal, Gurbachan Singh and Assistant Driver Husn Lal, among others, were honoured with garlands.
Several retired railway officials and employees were present, including Hardeep Singh, Shashikant Madan, Station Superintendent Attari, Manmeet Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Ex-CLI, Ashok Kumar, retired driver, Sohal, Arjun Singh of RPF and Rakesh Kumar, retired CLI.
The meeting concluded with an address by Association President S. Beant Singh, who thanked all those who contributed to the successful operation of the Samjhauta Express as well as the members who helped make the programme successful.
A large number of retired railway employees and other members, including S. Pawan Kumar, Treasurer, S. Baljit Matharu, S. Ajit Singh Walia, Madam Rakhbir Kaur, Markanda, Madam Poonam, Madam Manjit Kaur, Jaspal Singh, Shri Ram, Jagdish Chander, Surinder Singh Mukar and Satwant Singh, were also present.
