Amritsar, June 2 (K.L. Jit Walia) – Senior Punjab Congress leader Sanjeev Arora has expressed serious concern over the growing adulteration of food products, stating that it is becoming a major threat to public health across Punjab, including Amritsar. He said that the fruits, vegetables, and dairy products that people consider safest for their families are now facing serious questions regarding their purity and quality.
Arora stated that complaints are continuously emerging about the use of chemical substances to artificially ripen mangoes, synthetic colors to make watermelons appear redder and more attractive, and various chemicals being mixed into fruits and vegetables. He said this is not only a fraud on consumers but also a direct threat to public health.
Referring to the recent incident in Amritsar where farmers destroyed pure milk, Arora said it was not an ordinary event but a symbolic protest against the adulteration of milk, ghee, paneer, and other dairy products. Through this action, farmers attempted to draw the attention of the government and administration to this serious issue. He described it as a warning that the situation could become even more alarming if timely action is not taken.
He further stated that the continuous consumption of chemically treated and adulterated food products is causing long-term health problems. Rising health concerns among young people, hormonal imbalances, and reproductive challenges have become major issues of discussion. The increasing dependence on technologies such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is also prompting society to reflect on the changes taking place in food habits and lifestyles.
Arora emphasized that the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Food Safety Department, Health Department, and District Administration bear greater responsibility in addressing this issue. He urged these departments to immediately launch special inspection drives and conduct comprehensive testing of food products being sold in markets. If negligence or misconduct is found at any level, strict action should be taken against the responsible officials.
He also called for stricter food safety laws and special awareness campaigns to educate the public. Those who endanger the health of millions for personal financial gain, he said, should face severe punishment.
Sanjeev Arora concluded by saying that Punjab has historically been known for purity, agriculture, and nutritious food. Today, collective efforts are needed to preserve that identity. He stressed that this is not only a battle for the present but also for the health and future of coming generations. If concrete steps are not taken today, tomorrow may be too late.
