Says Rising Prices Have Broken the Backbone of the Poor
Amritsar, June 1 (K.L. Jit Walia)In protest against the continuous increase in the prices of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas by the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress Party organized a massive protest march in Majitha town under the leadership of Majitha constituency Congress in-charge Bhagwant Pal Singh Sachar. During the demonstration, Congress workers also burned an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to journalists on the occasion, Bhagwant Pal Singh Sachar said that the impact of rising petrol and diesel prices extends far beyond fuel costs, as increased transportation expenses make all essential commodities more expensive. He alleged that the policies of the Central Government are continuously increasing the financial burden on ordinary citizens.
Sachar further claimed that the government’s close ties with large corporate houses are well known, and that the burden of inflation is being placed on the common people to benefit big industrialists. He stated that not only petrol, diesel, and cooking gas, but also fertilizers, ration supplies, and other daily necessities have become significantly more expensive, making life increasingly difficult for poor and middle-class families.
He said that inflation has now become unbearable for the public and urged the Central Government to reduce the prices of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas to provide relief to common citizens and ease the economic burden on poor and middle-income households.
During the protest march, a large number of Congress workers and local residents raised slogans against the Central Government and expressed their opposition to its policies.
On the occasion, Sachar also criticized the functioning of the Punjab Government. He alleged that the state government has failed on every front and that the law-and-order situation in Punjab has become alarming, with incidents of murder and crime occurring frequently. He stated that neither ordinary citizens nor police officials feel safe. Referring to increasing extortion demands by gangsters and the recent murder of a shopkeeper in Makhu, he claimed these incidents highlight the government’s inability to maintain public security.
Prominent Congress leaders and workers present at the event included Navdeep Singh Sona, former Chairman Gurmeet Singh Bhillowal, Navtej Pal Singh Sohiya, Sandeep Singh Kajikot, Sukhwinder Singh Majitha, Surjit Singh Bhillowal, and many others.
