Amritsar, July 23 (K.L. Jit Walia): The first spell of the monsoon has triggered flood-like conditions in several villages of the Ajnala constituency, raising fresh concerns among residents. Following last year’s devastation caused by breaches in the Dhussi embankment, locals fear a repeat of the crisis.
Sukh Aujla, brother of Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla, visited Ghonewal and several other villages in Ajnala to assess the situation and interact with affected residents.
He said that due to the first heavy monsoon rainfall, standing crops in villages including Gaggomahal, Dial Bhatti, Anayatpura, Harar, Nanakpura, Amb Kotli, and Gujjarpura have been submerged. He added that the situation is alarming for residents who had already suffered severe losses during last year’s floods.
Sukh Aujla urged Punjab Cabinet Minister and Ajnala MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal to visit the affected areas personally and assess the ground situation. He alleged that timely preventive measures and flood management could have prevented the current conditions.
He stated that agricultural fields have turned into “vast stretches of water,” leaving farmers and villagers deeply worried. He appealed to the Punjab Government to immediately deploy flood management teams to inspect the riverbanks. According to him, river embankments were weakened due to sand mining activities, reducing their ability to withstand rising water levels.
He further demanded that the government begin restoration work without delay and criticized the administration, saying that timely action could have prevented the present crisis.
